ABSTRACT
Today is the age of speed and consumption. Services and products, in their effort to survive, rely on branding as leverage against this speed and easy consumption. Similarly, cities too can be branded by establishing corporate identities, whereby they can present themselves to the attention of the world in a more powerful way. This not only enables cities to gain a strong position against tough competitive conditions, but it also increases their worldwide recognition and makes them a global attraction.
There are various examples showing that when a city’s corporate identity and social and cultural opportunities are developed through a branding process, significant results emerge. This study examines the development of urban and corporate identities through the branding process.
Cities are also places that live, develop, and transform into the realm of existence of modern people. Just like people and societies, cities have identities informed by their historical, social, cultural, and geographical conditions with the collective efforts of their inhabitants. Graphic design products and logos have an important part in forming the identity and branding of a city in this era during which visuality, image, presentation, and advertising are very effective. This study will discuss the concept of city identity and the city-branding process through various examples of cities from Turkey and around the world.
In particular, it focuses on the graphic design products and logos associated with the corporate identity developed through the branding process, as graphic design products and logos reflect each city’s unique character and historical, cultural and symbolic value. Numerous cities around the world represent their identity by applying a branding process that includes logos and graphic design products. Finally, this study looks at various examples from Turkey and around the world to create at a general picture of this subject.
