ABSTRACT
In this study, “Being There”, a novel by Polish-American writer Jerzy Kosinki in 1970 and the film “Being There”, an adaptation of Kosinski’s novel will be examined in the context of intermediality. Also in this study, as being a media, role of literature and cinema and transposition of literal aspects to the cinema will be determined.
“Being There”, is a kind of ‘political allegory’, about a gardener who becomes famous by means of various chan-ces. The novel attracted so much attention when it was published. The movie “Being There” also attracted attention and won several prizes about cinema. Both novel and movie criticize the 1970’s American political and social life.
The protagonist of “Being There” learns his life from tv screen, with Kosinski’s words is a “videot”. In film ver-sion, as Chance is a kind of tv addicted, also can be described as a “flower child” because of his mentality. So between novel and film versions, Kosinski must have changed his mind about his charachter Chance. This change may have some reasons. In this duration between 1970 and 1979, Kosinski has changed his mind about tv and American politic matters were also changed topic of his film.
Ersel Kayaoğlu’s approach to literature based adaptation movies will be used in this study.
In this context, the relationship between literature and movie will be examined with this novel and movie, and approaches of writer’s and director’s will be studied. By means of this article, intermediality -as a new approach for literatu-re based movies and also our country will be examined and it is also aimed to contribute this approaches gaining practice.
