ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to make an assessment of spatial and environmental awareness in school-age children between the ages of 11-14. In this context, a workshop was organized. With this workshop, it was aimed that children identify spatial problems in their schools, where they spend a significant part of their time, and produce creative solutions for these problems. It was expected to express their solutions, which they produce during the workshop, in an artistic language in two and three dimension. This workshop was held at in Oklubali Secondary School in Inonu, Eskisehir. The workshop was carried out by Research Assistants and undergraduate students from the Department of Interior Architecture and volunteer students from other departments of Eskisehir Technical University. Within the scope of this study, the students from 5 to 8th grades were selected. Participants worked in groups of 7-9 people. A total of 9 groups were created. The workshop consists of three main stages. The first stage consists of receiving positive and negative opinions about the school building, the immediate surroundings and the interior spaces (classrooms, canteen, corridors etc.), discussing possible solutions and visualizing them. At the end of the first stage, children prepared presentation boards consisting of writings and two-dimensional drawings. In the second stage; three-dimensional modeling was made for the problems and suggestions. In this process, the development of student’s hand skills and creativity was taken into consideration. Three-dimensional modeling contributes to the realization of children's imaginations about school spaces and improves their spatial perceptions. The third stage is the evaluation stage which feedback was received on children's views and thoughts on interior architecture. As a result of this study; It was seen that this workshop, which is a one-day activity, developed a critical perspective by increasing the spatial perceptions of children about school spaces. It was observed that they developed creative solutions for the identified problems and expressed them in an artistic way. In addition, awareness of children related to the interior architecture profession has been increased.
