ABSTRACT

Touristic objects designed as city and city identity products are symbolic outputs of city-specific assets. Therefore, touristic objects have to be products that relevantly reflect the related cities’s identity. The researches conducted on main touristic objects in the world revealed that artifacts exhibited in museums are the prevalent sources of inspiration for touristic objects and are offered to visitors in museum boutiques and souvenir shops. It has also been determined that assets, which ensure the cities’s recognition, are produced as touristic objects/souvenirs. It is known that samewise in Turkey, the Ministry of Culture, municipalities, agencies, art galleries and similar authorities are working on producing high quality touristic objects. However, while some cities in the world and in Turkey are able to introduce touristic object designs that fulfil the criteria of city-identity relationship, some are not able to establish it. Likewise, it has been observed that touristic objects offered to visitors in Ordu are not completely able to recflect the city’s identity. The aim of this research is to propose genuine touristic object designs, which represent Ordu’s identity. In fact, the present touristic objects in Ordu need to be developed and improved as objects that possess a relevant relationship with the city’s historical, cultural, natural assets and its identity. In this context three of the cultural properties, which are registered in Ordu’s culture inventory and that bare strong potentials to be transformed into concrete products, have been evaluated as design suggestions. These are; Kurul Castle findings, Yason Cape and Church, and Rüsumat No: 4 Ship. These three assets are chosen from Ordu’s culture inventory and proposed as designs, since each of the assets remain recently on the city’s promotion events agenda, however none of them are converted into concrete products yet. It has been concluded that proposing authentic touristic object designs for Ordu will give the city a better representation chance both in the eye of people visiting it and eventually at a global level.
