1929’da Amerika’da patlak veren ve etkilerini 1930’lu yıllarda da sürdüren Büyük Buhran (The Great Depression) ile milyonlarca insan işsiz kalmış hem dünyada hem Amerikan toplumunda ciddi bir ekonomik kriz yaşanmıştır. Yaşanan siyasi ve ekonomik alandaki hareketlilik, toplumsal yapıyı ve sanatsal alandaki üretimleri ve sanat hareketlerini büyük ölçüde etkilemiştir. Toplumsal Gerçekçilik akımı da bu sürecin bir sonucu olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. 20. yüzyılın en önemli sanatçılarından Edward Hopper (1882-1967)’ın da tanıklık ettiği bu dönem, toplumsal çöküşün ve buhranın yaşandığı ve bireyin yalnızlaştığı pek çok insanın yaşamını her alanda olumsuz yönde etkilediği zorlu bir süreçtir. New York’lu bir sanatçı olarak Edward Hopper gerçekçi tarzdaki yapıtlarında; Amerikan toplumunun günlük hayatına, modern/endüstriyel yaşamın birey ve toplum üzerindeki etkisine, bireyin sessiz sakin anlarına ve kent yaşamında bireyin varoluşsal problemlerine odaklanmıştır. Makale, Amerika’da yaşanan Büyük Buhran ve sonrasında ortaya çıkan sanat hareketlerini ve yapıtlarında sıklıkla işlediği temalar sebebi ile kentsel yalnızlığın ressamı olarak tanımlanan Edward Hopper’ın modern ve çağdaş kent imgesini ve insanını yapıtlarında incelemeyi amaçlamıştır. Bu kapsamda metin içinde, öncelikle araştırmanın temel konusu olan Edward Hopper hakkında bilgi verilmiş, sanatçının yaşadığı sancılı dönemin sanatsal gelişmelerdeki karşılığı ve neticeleri ele alınmıştır. Ardından Edward Hopper’ın sanatsal pratiğinin ne olduğuna ve dönemin sanat akımlarındaki yerine, sanat felsefesi ve sanatsal tavrına, yapıtlarında sıklıkla başvurduğu bir teknik olarak ışık-gölgeyi etkili kullanımına değinilmiştir. Araştırmadaki verilerin elde edilmesinde, belge tarama yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Son olarak, metin içinde yer alan veriler sonuç bölümünde tartışılmıştır. Görsel ve plastik sanatlar tarihi açısından oldukça zengin etkileşimlerin, evrim ve köklü dönüşümlerin olduğu bir dönemde yaşayan sanatçı, özgün üslup anlayışındaki sanatsal üretimleri ve faaliyetleri ile yaşadığı topluma güçlü bir bakış ortaya koymuştur.

With the Great Depression that broke out in America in 1929 and continued its effects in the 1930s, millions of people were unemployed and a serious economic crisis was experienced both in the world and in the American society. The dynamism in the political and economic field has greatly affected the social structure and artistic production and art movements. Social Realism movement emerged as a result of this process. This period, witnessed by Edward Hopper (1882-1967), one of the most important artists of the 20th century, was a difficult process in which social collapse and depression had a negative impact on the lives of many people in which the individual became lonely. As a New Yorker artist, Edward Hopper in his realistic works; It focuses on the daily life of American society, the impact of modern/industrial life on the individual and society, the quiet moments of the individual, and the existential problems of the individual in urban life. The article aims to examine the modern and contemporary city image and people of Edward Hopper, who is defined as the painter of urban loneliness due to the art movements that emerged in the Great Depression in America and its aftermath, and the themes he frequently deals with in his works. In this context, firstly, information about Edward Hopper, which is the main subject of the research, is given, and the artistic developments and the consequences of the painful period in which the artist lived are discussed. Then, the artistic practice of Edward Hopper, his place in the art movements of the period, his philosophy of art and artistic attitude, and the effective use of light and shadow as a technique he frequently applies in his works are mentioned. Document scanning method was used to obtain the data in the study. Finally, the data in the text are discussed in the conclusion part. The artist, who lives in a period of very rich interactions, evolution and radical transformations in terms of visual and plastic arts history, has displayed a strong view of the society in which he lives with her artistic productions and activities in a unique style.
