ABSTRACT
With the Great Depression that broke out in America in 1929 and continued its effects in the 1930s, millions of people were unemployed and a serious economic crisis was experienced both in the world and in the American society. The dynamism in the political and economic field has greatly affected the social structure and artistic production and art movements. Social Realism movement emerged as a result of this process. This period, witnessed by Edward Hopper (1882-1967), one of the most important artists of the 20th century, was a difficult process in which social collapse and depression had a negative impact on the lives of many people in which the individual became lonely. As a New Yorker artist, Edward Hopper in his realistic works; It focuses on the daily life of American society, the impact of modern/industrial life on the individual and society, the quiet moments of the individual, and the existential problems of the individual in urban life.
The article aims to examine the modern and contemporary city image and people of Edward Hopper, who is defined as the painter of urban loneliness due to the art movements that emerged in the Great Depression in America and its aftermath, and the themes he frequently deals with in his works. In this context, firstly, information about Edward Hopper, which is the main subject of the research, is given, and the artistic developments and the consequences of the painful period in which the artist lived are discussed. Then, the artistic practice of Edward Hopper, his place in the art movements of the period, his philosophy of art and artistic attitude, and the effective use of light and shadow as a technique he frequently applies in his works are mentioned. Document scanning method was used to obtain the data in the study. Finally, the data in the text are discussed in the conclusion part. The artist, who lives in a period of very rich interactions, evolution and radical transformations in terms of visual and plastic arts history, has displayed a strong view of the society in which he lives with her artistic productions and activities in a unique style.
