ABSTRACT

Although the concept of time is old in the philosophical context, the link between time and photography has been mentioned since the discovery of the photograph. Prior to Henri Bergson, Newton’s “Time in everyday life “, Kant’s “synchronicity”, Hegel’s “now is past and the whole of the future”, Nietzsche developed the notions of ”eternal return”. When Henri Bergson, one of the important thinkers of the 20th century, was born, twenty years had passed since the invention of the photograph (1839). Bergson provided insights into change and continuity. According to him; times converge; the past is added to the top of the past and is included in the current time. When examined by Bergson's perception of time; while Bragaglia's photographs focus on the spirit of the movement, he has acquired images of the past. In his photographs, Sugimoto made his journey into the history of both himself and people. It is memory which recalls its experiences and makes connections in consciousness. Almond brought both his own memories and the history of hundreds of years of sea to the present. Wesely showed the existence of time with solargraphies, carrying the past to the present. In literature it hadn’t been come across the related photographers examined together in this concept. In this study the meaningful connection among Bragaglia, Sugimoto, Almond and Wesely’s photographs will be examined comparatively in Bergson’s time concept.
