ABSTRACT

The sense of reality and individual, which changed in association with modernism, has not only changed the aesthetics of literature but also of theatre narrative. Space structurings emerged, which determine the individual’s status in the construction of the dramatical and which enable interdisciplinary interaction. Among these structurings, rooms, which we encounter in the narrative universe of modern literature and modern theatre, stand out particularly. In this study, primarily the person perception of modernism and modern individual’s solitude will be revealed in a general framework. Afterwards, the concept “room” as a space the individual flees to become free/take refuge/ find peace will be treated within the boundaries of Kafka’s creation as a modernist author. The novel’s narrative and Alt Kat Art Studio’s play “Metamorphosis” will be compared in terms of production and the Room in the story and the Room in the theatre play will be scrutinised in terms of space-person relation and in its meaning dimension. At the same time, the relationship that “Room” establishes with the audience and the experience born out of this relationship will be evaluated within the scope of the study.
