ABSTRACT
Zero waste fashion design is applied to various stages of the fashion lifecycle to limit waste. The modern mode of fast consumption encouraged by the ready-to-wear industry produces an abundance of waste. Fashion designers who grasp the destructive impact of this waste are using zero waste fashion design methods in the designing of a new generation garments. These methods are sustainable and systemic alternatives to fast fashion production. Zero waste fashion design consist of pre-consumer and post-consumer zero waste design methods. Pre-consumer zero waste design minimizes waste during production while post-consumer zero waste design reuses clothing to prolong its consumption. Pre-consumer zero waste design utilizes zero waste pattern cutting, fabric manipulation, and tesellation. Post-consumer zero waste design emphasizes upcycling. Both methods have been examined in this paper along with selected pioneer designer’s practical examples.
