ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to make a comparative assessment between the display problems due to shortage of the art galleries in Turkey and having been used alternative exhibition methods outside the galleries although relatively more galleries in the West in the years of 1950 to 1970. Western artists have both tried alternative exhibition methods in the galleries instead of using canvas and arranged exhibitions in the nature and in the public areas out of the galleries to stand against the art market between 1950 and 1970. At the same time, the artists in Turkey have kept to canvas paintings to be exhibited in the galleries when art galleries and art museums have not been established yet, and as they have not been sponsored by the government adequately, they couldn’t make art in the public areas. On the assumption one of the reasons of these diversities is that Turkish artists couldn’t reveal the individuality as Western artists could, it is stated that individuality has not developed as in the West. In addition to this, one of the reasons of the art market and collectorship have been occurred lately is that capitalism developed in Turkey later than the West. At that time, Turkish artists have been trying to solve the modern art movements in the West. But, in the West, the modern art movements have been passed already and the artists have started to tend the contemporary art. Whereas there have been discussed abstraction and cubic forms in Turkish painting art, in the West there have been new art movements and the definition of art has been changed. The aim of the artists in the West is to react against the art market and so they have been producing the works of art which is unsellable and not buyable. However the artists in Turkey were facing problems that the art market have just beginning to form. According to the Turkish artists, an art market had to occur, the works of art could be exhibited, have to be criticized, could be bought and sold. If Turkish artists had made art in the public areas with the support of the state and could produce original works then trying to adapt them to the West, today we could be at a very different point in the field of art. Two sample works among the works of Turkish artists, photomanipulation is used in order to show how they could be exhibited in public space.
