ABSTRACT

With the proclamation of the Republic, in the context of modernization movements implemented in every field, in 1928, the letter reform was realized and the Turkish alphabet based on Latin letters was put into effect. For this reason, after the alphabet revolution in November 1928, in order to teach reading and writing with new letters, Folk Schools, Public Courses and Night Courses were transformed into National Schools and a total literacy mobilization was initiated throughout the country. The cultural importance of the early Republican educational mobilization has been the subject of the paintings of that period. These pictures generally depict healthy school children in their uniforms, women taking literacy lessons, and village schools where girls and girls meet the ideals of education and the Republic. These pictures are important in terms of documenting the process. In this context, although the theme of literacy mobilization has been reflected in the works of many artists, the works of Şeref Akdik, Malik Aksel and Cemal Tollu, who produced relatively more works on the subject, between 1928-1940 were taken into consideration as a purposeful sample and it is aimed to make contribution to the literature about the findings. Şeref Akdik's works named Literacy Course / National School and School Enrollment, Malik Aksel's works named First School and New School, and Cemal Tollu's works named Peasants Reading Alphabet and Portrait of a Teacher were examined and evaluated within the scope of the subject. At the end of the evaluation, it was understood that the relevant artists contributed to the efforts to adopt the letter revolution in the early Republican period, to settle it and to increase literacy, to encourage the people to literacy and to increase their motivation with their works in accordance with the ideology of the period, and at the same time document the understanding of education of the period with their works. Qualitative research methods and techniques were used in the study which general scanning model was used. In the research, data were collected from virtual and printed sources by scanning the literature.
