ABSTRACT


Typography is used in the fields of art education as well as in interdisciplinary research. In general, typography can be said to be an art of writing created by using letters, numbers and symbols. In ancient Greek, ‘typos form (form) and‘ graphia ’(write) as a result of the combination of the words‘ Typhography ’was named. Typography is important in order to understand a text, not to be tiring and to convey the desired information accurately to the reader. Typography is also a term used to describe the printing technique developed by Gutenberg. Visual communication design and technological developments in this area have changed in terms of typography meaning and scope. Nowadays, typography covers the studies related to designing, arranging and arranging fonts and text blocks and technological developments in this field. Typography in graphic design is a design element and requires an understandable formal order. Therefore, writing and typography is one of the basic elements of visual communication design. As a visual communication tool, graphic design was effective in the inclusion of typography in the curriculum. In line with the developments in the field of visual communication design, typography education at the undergraduate and graduate levels has been shaped to the present day. Typography is an important visual tool used in designing a graphic product for visual communication. The function of graphic design to provide visual communication has determined the place of typography in education as a graphic communication tool and a design element. Although the content is the same in the educational process, application differences can be seen. Typography can be given as a separate des in educational institutions as well as in Graphic Design course. Teaching methods developed in terms of application studies may vary. Since digital technology is developing nowadays, writing applications, font designs are mostly carried out by means of related programs developed in digital environment other than traditional methods. However, as a method, it can be said that computer applications can be objectionable during the education process. Priority of manual studies in education and training may be more beneficial than the development of sketches before digital application. Therefore, the general purpose of this study; To give information about typography as a visual communication tool in the relationship between art and technology and to explain the manual and digital application approaches in education-teaching process in general.
