ABSTRACT

The rivers that exist in the settlements play roles such as creating the cities' identity, creating the urban texture, and influencing the development and growth of the city. While conducting morphological examinations of cities that analyze urban identities, attention should be paid to the water elements in the cities. In settlements where cultural and historical architectural heritages are intense, the presence of water elements in historical sites and their interaction with registered buildings are considered essential. Because in such settlements, historic buildings and environments continue their development interactively with water elements. For this reason, it is important to make morphological examinations in historical settlements with water elements. In this study, morphological studies were carried out on Mudurnu district, which is an old Ottoman town within the borders of Bolu province, which contains heritage elements with superior cultural and architectural value and at the same time has a dominant river that divides the urban texture into two part. The analysis studies carried out were revealed in the first stage of Mudurnu River and its surroundings, maps and images were produced in line with the data based on field observations about the general urban texture of Mudurnu. In the light of the data obtained as a result of general analyzes, the process of collecting typological data at building scale has been started. Data tables were created for 135 buildings around the Mudurnu River in line with the information obtained from field studies. The informations obtained from the tables were analyzed with the total population sampling method and comparative graphs were created for the buildings existing on both sides of the river. Evaluations were made on these graphs, and spesific suggestions for Mudurnu were expressed. As a result, it is aimed to be a guide in a possible morphological analysis of the settlements that contain rivers, and have historical and cultural value or in the typological evaluation studies of the historical buildings in that region. Besides, awareness has been provided in understanding the positions and importance of rivers in historical cities.
