ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to transfer the local characteristics and construction techniques of doors, one of the most fundamental facade elements of traditional houses of the cultural heritage, to future generations. The study was carried out in the Karacasu district of Aydın harbouring the Aphrodisias Ancient City, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Karacasu district consists of two regions separated from each other by a tannery pit. These regions are Karşıyaka, the first, and Çarşıyaka, the next settlement. In both settlements, there are traditional houses with many local identities, some of which are under conservation. In the study, two basic methods were utilized to reveal the characteristics of traditional house doors. Within the scope of the study, doors of 60 houses were first photographed and technical drawings were made, and then an inventory form was formed to describe the features of the doors. In the inventory form, positions of doors in houses, their construction techniques, the number of wings, complementary elements (lock, hinge, knocker, ring, bolt), and their deterioration levels were discussed. Half of the selected 60 houses is from Karşıyaka, the first settlement, while the other half are from Çarşıyaka. The reason for including an equal number of doors from both regions is because there exist variations in the construction techniques of traditional houses between regions. To reveal the reflection of the differences in the doors, an equal number of doors from both regions were considered. As a result of the analyses, the current conditions of the traditional doors were analysed and the characteristic features of the region were compared according to the regions. It has been ascertained that there are variations in the construction techniques of the doors in both regions, and in general, most of the doors are sadly about to disappear. In this context, it is of great significance to analyse and record the current status of existing cultural heritage, to build cultural awareness in future generations, and to contribute to restoration works to be performed in the future.
