ABSTRACT

Intercultural interaction and communication express the communication and interaction taking place between the individuals of different cultural areas, knowledge and experience. The scope of interaction and communication as a discipline has, in time, expanded to cover various cultural groups. In the years passing by, cultures have become separate and independent ontological fields, which differ from one another most of the time. In the second half of the twentieth century, different cultures and nations, albeit preserving some of their original qualities, became interconnected and compound, getting into a gradually increasing interaction especially in durable consumer goods. In today’s world of more intense and interrelated interaction between different cultures and international relations, a sensitivity for intercultural interaction manifests itself in an even stronger way; and, hence, within the given context, the inevitability of the influence of Bauhaus furniture designs over the furniture designs of the present day. When the Bauhaus School was founded, it overtook the duty of questioning all the areas of the means and possibilities of design. Providing cooperative work in increasing collaboration, and, in a sense, departing from a common ground, it has succeeded in establishing the relation between the industry, handcraft, disciplines and creative design powers and aesthetic form. The present study assesses today’s furniture design criteria in reference to the Bauhaus furniture design criteria. As a result of the assessment of a furniture design proposal that can meet those criteria, the influence of the Bauhaus furniture design over today’s furniture design is specified. The Bauhaus design criteria are handled and assessed in respect to aesthetics, production, and intercultural interactions. Today’s furniture design and Bauhaus furniture design are compared and contrasted. The developments that have taken place since the foundation of the Bauhaus School in the second half of the XXth century are investigated and the influence of the Bauhaus design over this process is emphasized. In addition, the study concentrates on the development of intercultural interaction and communication in general, and the influence of Bauhaus over intercultural interaction and aesthetic forms in Bauhaus products are explained. The Bauhaus furniture designs are classified as pre-production stage of the furniture, the production stage of the furniture, and post-production stage of the furniture, and the reflection of the Bauhaus furniture designs on today’s furniture designs is explained with accompanying visuals. The aim of the present study is to investigate the reflection of the Bauhaus furniture designs as aesthetic production on today’s furniture designs within the context of intercultural interaction and communication. The furniture criteria of the Bauhaus School founded in Germany are specified and the furniture production stages are investigated and assessed in respect of aesthetics.
