ABSTRACT
This article involves analyzing the Pointillism technique specifically by Painter Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and Composer Webern’s Symphony, Op. 21. Within this framework, historical backround of Pointillism, Seurat’s painting perception, the scene named as A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Webern’s approach toward the Pointillism and Symphony, Op. 21 were studied respectively, then these works were compared. The purpose of this research is to build on a new ground of feeding streams and emerging causes of this method by shedding light on the Pointillism technique specific to aforementioned works.
The philosophical background of the Pointillism technique is both the origin and destination of the article, just like the palindrome in Webern's works. As a result of the analyzes, it can be seen that although Georges Seurat and Anton Webern are representatives of different art branches, they exhibit similar approaches. But, due to the original conditions of the arts they represent, different projections of the Pointillism technique can be observed in the works of these artists. Such differences do not preclude the evaluation of Seurat and Webern in the same movement.
Throughout history, mankind has tended to disintegrate every object it dealt with. Especially after the Renaissance, he began to consider the truth as a phenomenon outside of itself. A trend towards specialization in fields such as science and art has begun, therefore the tendency of disintegration is also reflected in these areas. The reflection of this tendency to disintegrate, is the individual in the sociology, the schizophrenia in the psychology and the division of the atom in the physics. In the direction of the trend, the art branches gradually move away from the main body, focusing on subdivisions, and every subdivision becomes a main division itself. The continuous sprouting of this specialization eventually came up to the border Pointillism technique. Symphony, Op. 21 and A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte can be shown as the most important foliage of this continuous sprouting.
