Dünya genelindeki popülerliği açısından en ön plandaki sanat dalı olan sinema, kitleleri eğlendirmenin yanı sıra eğitici, bilgilendirici ve yönlendirici işlevlere de sahiptir. Bilgilendirici işlevi, her türlü olguda olduğu gibi, diğer ülkelerin ve toplumların tanıtılması hususunda da oldukça etkili olmaktadır. Dünya genelindeki erişim kolaylığı sayesinde geniş kitlelere ulaşabilen filmler bilgi kaynağına dönüşmüş olmanın yanı sıra, içerdikleri görsel ve sesli öğelerin de desteğiyle, sunulan bilginin ve bilgiye dayalı oluşan imajların kalıcılığını da sağlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda, özellikle Hollywood endüstrisi, en güçlü ve etkili küresel sinema sektörü olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Pek çok Hollywood filminde, çeşitli ülke ve toplumlar gibi, Türkiye ve Türk insanı da belli kalıplaşmış yargılara dayanan imajlar aracılığıyla temsil edilmiştir. Hollywood’da uzun yıllar hakim olmuş egzotik Orta Doğu ülkesi Türkiye ve Doğulu insanları imajı, 1970’lerin sonlarından itibaren bazı filmlerde bir değişime uğramış ve daha olumsuz bir karaktere bürünmüştür. Bu açıdan ön plana çıkan Midnight Express (1978), Passport to Terror (1989) ve Prison Heat (1993) filmlerinin, “Türk hapishanesi” olgusu üzerinden sundukları yeni Türkiye ve Türk insanı imajları, bu makalenin temel araştırma konusudur. Çalışmanın yöntemi, yazılı literatür taraması ve film analizlerine dayalıdır.

Cinema, as the most significant fine arts branch due its worldwide popularity, has educative, informative and orientating functions as well as entertaining. The informative function has been very efficient in terms of introducing other countires and their societies as well as introducing all types of phenomena. Movies, while turning into information sources as of the worldwide means to be accessed, also provide the permanency of the information and the images rising from this information presented with the support of visual and vocal elements included. In this context, especially the Hollywood industry emerges as the most powerful and efficient global movie sector. In many Hollywood movies, Turkey and the Turkish people, just like various other countries and societies, have been presented through images depending certain stereotypes. The image of the exotic Middle-eastern country of Turkey with her Oriental society which has been dominant in Hollywood for long decades have been transformed into a more negative image in certain movies dating from the end of the 1970s. The new images of Turkey and Turkish people represented through the phenomenon of “Turkish prison” presented in the movies which have been significant in this context, namelyMidnight Express (1978), Passport toTerror (1989) and Prison Heat (1993) is the main subject of this article. The methodology of the study is based on literature review and movie analysis.
