ABSTRACT


Magazines are a tool of communication meeting readers in determined periods in order to inform public and to mold public opinion. The objective of the first magazines published in 17. century was merely to inform public. However, the objective of informing public has changed in time and being memorable became more significant. In addition, the magazines have become channels for reaching and communicating with customers for many commercial businesses. In this context, to increase the noteworthiness, the requirement of the visual data arrangement made it significant to use the graphic designs in magazines. Hence, the existance of a magazine without visual design is no longer considered as a matter of question. Besides these, the use of design in the magazines has become a commercial purpose. The function of affecting communities has become more pronounced by the disappearance of the mere concept of art in design. Magazine cover is the main problem of studying the effect of various items (visualitly, color, typography) used in page designs on readers. Within the scope of the study, a questionnaire was developed by the author. The survey was made to 613 people. The assessment of the data acquired and the elements used in the design of the magazine covers (visualitly, color, and typography); has been made over the noteworthiness, different variables (age, gender, and level of income). During the assessment process, crosstabs have been used via statistical packaged program. The created crosstabs have been explicated with frequency and percentage rates. According to the data acquired, while readers mostly pay attention to the visuals, the least attention-grabbing element has been color. Besides, elements used have become a lower attention-grabbing factor due to the increase in age.
