ABSTRACT

The subject of this research is metamodernism and the performatist photography which is a metamodern practice. Metamodernism is the name of a new era, cultural logic and structure of feeling which has emerged at the beginning of 2000s as an attempt towards surpassing postmodernism. In the research, it was aimed to understand and to explore what kind of structure of feeling this trend has, its main characteristics, by which artistic and cultural forms it expresses itself, its sense of subjectivity, and what is the role of performatist photography in representing this sense, and it was used hermeneutic method which is one of the qualitative research methods for realizing this aim, with reference to the problem of the lack of research towards metamodernism. Because of that performatist photography is a practice which represents a metamodern subjectivity understanding, the mentions in the research about modernism, postmodernism and metamodernism are more in the context of the senses of subjectivity. It is certain that both modernism and postmodernism are discourses which distinguish through their positioning of the subject and the qualities they refer to the subject. While modernism sublimates the subject as a rational and unified existence, postmodernism approaches to fragment and liquidate the subject. While postmodernism fragments and deconstructs the real based on poststructuralist sense of sign and linguistic analysis, this also affects the subject itself by leading a decrease in affection. Fragmentation of the real brings about the fragmentation of the subject. Metamodernism which has emerged as a reaction to postmodernism and postmodern identity policies establishes itself as a language of objection towards saving the subject from fragmentation and rectifying it. In the research, it was concluded that metamodernism points out a new sense of subjectivity, that the subject strives once again for a unified existence, and that this attempt is expressed distinctively in the performatist photography.
