ABSTRACT


Closer look at some of the works of Anish Kapoor, one of the most prominent artists in comtemporary sculpture,we can observe him pushing the limits of modern art. At first glance,Kapoor’s work appears to be accessible and assessable in actuality,it is represents multi-layered symbolism,traditional conceptualism and philosophy him from his comtemporaries. The artist questions general scientific theories in a mystic and transcendental way. His works examine the concepts of eternity, quality, beauty, existence/absence and science and the meanings of certain concepts by analyzing them in depth. One can witness his merit in contemporary art and interpret his sense of aesthetics by a thorough examination of the exhibition in Monumenta entitled Leviathan, which occupies an area of 72.00 m3 Grand Palais´nave. Based on this examination,opportunity represents itself to elaborate and express the importance of his work in contemporary art. This study will start from the Romantic Era, which refers to the Late-Enlightenment Period and the analysis of the book Leviathan, published in 1851by Thomas Hobbes, and deemed to be the main inspiration source of his artwork. Leviathan will be analyzed by positioning it according to its effects the audience and the philosophicl background of the work will be discussed. The questioning of transcendence-sovereignty will be important in the analysis of the work. The footprints of Romanticism can best be seen in literature and philosophy. The main theme in German Idealism and in the problematic of sublime which Kant inaugurated. Thoughts of the poet Friedrich Schiller about the sublime have also inspired this work. In summary at this work with the main tenets of Hobbes´ political philosophy, the analysis of the concept sovereignty in the Romantic, Modern and Postmodern Art with the terminologies of philosophers such as Immanuel Kant and Jean-François Lyotord will be useful in the making sense of Kapoor’s work.
