ABSTRACT


Painting has transformed on certain levels throughout the ages. The plane of the painting has been shaped for different purposes in each period. For these purposes, images are sometimes made on the wall and sometimes on canvas or another plane. However, in some studies, the image remained behind different layers. The invisible image has become part of the hidden layers. In this context, artists such as Raphaelle Peale, Rene Magritte, Howard Kanovitz, John Baldessari, Heide Fasnacht have created hidden layers in different ways. However, Baldessari differs from other artists by questioning the semantic and philosophical place of the image in art, especially with its hidden layers in his photography-based works. Surfaces with different shapes have removed the visibility of the image. The layers blocking the visibility of the image have forced the viewer to read a different work. Thus, the hidden layers of the artist carried his works to a conceptual stage and brought the concept of idea to the fore. This study aimed to look at the hidden layers of John Baldessari from a new perspective. New possibilities for reality behind visible and invisible layers have been revealed. This study is important in order to underline these possibilities and to bring the perspective of the hidden layers to the literature. In line with this purpose and importance, some photo-based works of John Baldessari were examined. Particularly hidden parts of these works have been shed light on and made it possible to look at the work from a different angle.
