ABSTRACT

The Gazi Education Institute - Gazi Terbiye Enstitüsü - Department of Art and Craft was founded in 1932 as an integral part of modern education with the arts and business education teachers to be trained and began teaching and learning based on the report of John Dewey on Turkish Education system in 1928. The separate programs, were combined under the Department of Painting, since the budget did not allow for one art teacher for three-hour painting lesson and a separate Work-Technical teacher for three-hour business lessons in secondary schools in 1934. Veysel Erüstün, who graduated from Painting and Business Department, Gazi Education Institute in 1935, was appointed as a teacher to the institution he graduated in 1940 after providing services in various positions. He concentrated his teaching on business education and continued his painting studies in the figurative and landscape tradition with an impressionist approach until 1945. After the World War II, the abstract art that began to influence artists in Turkey mainly, also affected Veysel Erüstün. He continued his works with an understanding becoming far from the figure and approaching cubism in time and made abstract oil paints tachism approach. He has set his real personality on a determined path in the abstract line he took after the 1960s. The artist, who is extremely open to innovation, performed print painting and pentoral painting together after 1969. He especially preferred engraving in his printmaking works and created a harmony between the engravings and paint pictures in terms of form and content. His engravings included an abstract expression style, like his paintings. Veysel Erüstün, who has also taught many names of Turkish painting graduated from "Gazi Education Institute", has worked with the principle that “One can educate himself first so that he can teach others” he has become an artist teacher who does not like to present himself or his painting and tries to produce. Veysel Erüstün's teaching and his provided services to the art of painting and his place in Contemporary Turkish Art were examine in this study within the data obtained after literature scanning and qualitative research methods. It is thought that the works of Veysel Erüstün will contribute to the artist as an artist and teacher in the context of contemporary art in creating an original language of art regarding to interpreting plastic values together.
