ABSTRACT

There are various opposition to the orientalism criticisms made to Osman Hamdi Bey's works. Although these opinions have been expressed by many researchers for many years, it is thought that analyzing the spiritual dimension in Osman Hamdi Bey's paintings by analyzing the work will contribute to the concretization of the subject and therefore to a clearer understanding. The method of the study is based on Erwin Panofsky's three-step art criticism method. Using this method, three works of the artist were analyzed in comparison with three works of his teacher, Jean Leon Geromen, and the non-Orientalist spirituality in Osman Hamdi Bey's works was tried to be revealed by including the views of important researchers. Osman Hamdi Bey is technically under the influence of his teacher, the orientalist painter Jean Leon Gerome, and although he has made works in an orientalist style, he is an artist who has original ideas and dreams about Turkish culture and Turkish people and has been able to transfer them to his paintings with a unique spirituality. It would be unfair to say that there is no spirituality in the works of an artist who has devoted his works to the preservation of the cultural assets of the geography on which he lived and to the contemporary innovative society he dreams of, and to define a plain orientalist.
