ABSTRACT
Traditional culture plays an important role in Turkish painting as well as in all world arts. In our
country, it especially took place with an effort to create a national art against Western art based on
imitation. In Turkey since 1923, it is seen that there are efforts not only to catch universality, but
also to try to create a national art. From the beginning of the process of modernization in Turkish art,
the use of tradition and cultural doctrine has been illustrated in the pictures of artists. The linkages
of traditional influences to contemporary art in painting have changed after 1950. This change
has happened thanks to moving the processes and painting education in the world art to universal
dimensions, to appreciating the richness and the originality of our art and by the result of traditional
reflection of our art. The world is culturally in a global unity and harmony. The cultures of developed
civilizations can influence other cultures. The assimilation of the tradition is important in bringing
the effects of the works revealed in the past to the future. As the artists and critics have pointed out,
it is not usual that the tradition that has been going on for thousands of years and blended traces of
many different past civilizations influence artists. In this study; the illustration of traditional cultural
themes and its importance are emphasized in terms of the periods and artists.
