ABSTRACT

This research was carried out to investigate the effects of coffee pulp on ceramic glazes. In the study, a comprehensive approach was adopted by using a combination of literature review and experimental method. Coffee pulp was evaluated as an organic component and used in the preparation of various glaze recipes together with melting raw materials such as sulphene, ulexite, sodium feldspar, potassium feldspar and frit. These recipes were applied to red, chamotte and white ceramic bodies and fired at 1050°C in oxidation and reduction atmospheres to investigate texture, colour and surface properties. During the experimental process, the physical and aesthetic effects of coffee pulp on ceramic surfaces were analysed in detail. The effects of the combustion of the organic components contained in the coffee pulp on the glaze were evaluated, especially in terms of surface texture and colour differences. In addition, the effects of oxidation and reduction atmospheres on glazes were analysed comparatively. The results of the study revealed that coffee pulp can be used as an alternative organic component in ceramic glazes. The findings show that the different texture and colour properties of coffee pulp as a result of combustion offer an innovative approach to ceramic surfaces. In particular, the surface textures and colour transitions formed by the combustion process allow aesthetically unique results to be obtained. In this context, the study proves that original and innovative results can be obtained by incorporating alternative organic materials into ceramic glaze recipes. It also shows that a material such as coffee pulp, which is easily available in daily life, can be used in a sustainable and creative way in ceramic production.
