ABSTRACT

Assessment provides clues as to what individuals comprehend, how they think, what they are capable of, and what their tendencies and areas of interest are. Assessment is an important reflective process whereby one collects data on the development of child learners, documents such data and uses these to support children’s learning in the future. This study aims to reveal the roadmap employed by preschool teachers in assessing the artworks of their students. This study was conducted based on the qualitative research methods. The sample group of the research was selected among volunteer preschool teachers working at kindergartens which had been determined according to the convenience sampling. Interview technique and documentation method were utilized for obtaining the research data. The data obtained were analyzed by means of qualitative data analysis techniques. The study findings show that teachers usually tend to give feedback whilst children are working on their artworks as well as after finalizing their artworks. However, some of the findings of the research point out the fact that teachers are not sufficiently equipped as to how they should assess the artworks of the children. Additionally, differences were observed between teachers’ statements and practices in terms of assessing children’s artworks. In conclusion, adults’ one of the most important responsibilities should be “enabling children to express themselves in countless ways -by letting them use their own discourse skills- without entailing stereotypes on their imagination” in the preschool period which is one of the most sensitive stages of child development in all aspects from allowing children to do artworks to facilitating self-expression.
