ABSTRACT

Disciplines that are in a struggle for reaching new information and solutions, try to look for ways to work in cooperation with each other. These case cause educational institutions think of ways for an interdisciplinary approach. Design practice has also changed and designers started to design experiences, societies and systems alongside products. Furthermore, by being a facilitator, they have been expected to solve design problems in an interdisciplinary and collaborative working environment and in this case, they need to be experts in many subjects. As a result, design discipline has established interdisciplinary programs with other disciplines around the world. In this case, the interdisciplinary programs which have a combination of business and design schools educational understanding and put ‘design thinking’ discourse in the core of their education should be considered. However, when we review the literature about design thinking, due to having academic and management discourses, the confusion about the approach has been detected, furthermore, after examining the interdisciplinary programs related to this education, skepticism has arisen about how design education is given. In this article, it is aimed to examine ‘design thinking’ discourse and interdisciplinary programs which put ‘design thinking’ in the core of their education in accordance with the present requirements and to develop suggestions about the new educational model which will be a combination of business and design programs. This study has been prepared on the basis of books about the subject, written articles, sources available on the net and theoretical analysis of the obtained information. As a result, the academically way of ‘designerly thinking’ should be considered for this education. Specifically, the education which has specialized curriculum consisting of liberal arts education besides design and management disciplines should be given in undergraduate level. If it is given in graduate level, the studio and basic design education should be in the center of it and the foundation courses should be given to the students who do not have design education.
