Sait Maden played a pioneering role in the institutionalization of the graphic design discipline in Türkiye and in the adoption of modernist approaches, particularly in the field of book cover design. This study aims to evaluate seven book cover designs by Maden within the framework of grid systems. The research employs document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, and the covers are analyzed in terms of both their formal and semantic dimensions according to four fundamental grid types frequently referenced in graphic design literature: column, modular, hierarchical, and diagonal grids. Criterion sampling, a type of purposeful sampling, was used in the selection of the sample. The findings reveal that Sait Maden approached grid systems not merely as guiding frameworks that ensure order, but as dynamic design strategies that integrate with content, direct meaning-making, and enhance visual expression in book cover design. It is observed that Maden consciously applied principles inherent to each grid system—such as alignment, use of space, visual hierarchy, emphasis, and unity—in order to deepen both the formal quality and the symbolic expressive power of his covers. Among the analyzed designs, modular grids were used most frequently. An examination of page layouts shows that all covers are in a vertical format. Visual elements, typography, color, balance, and hierarchy are structured in a cohesive manner in accordance with the content and subject matter of each book. In this context, the study aims to contribute to the understanding of the functional, aesthetic, and expressive dimensions of grid systems within graphic design theory, while also serving as a reference for design education and offering insights for design practitioners.
