ABSTRACT

This study examines the visual narrative forms used in contemporary posters. Within the scope of the research, six different examples were examined: the King Khalid Foundation poster against violence against women, the Orion telescope advertisement, the Keloptic advertising poster, the Nivea product promotion, the WWF environmental campaign, and the Weight Watchers weight control poster. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis. Findings indicate that visual narrative forms function across a broad spectrum in conveying messages, ranging from direct communication to metaphor, and from wordplay to analogy. The King Khalid Foundation poster creates social awareness by addressing attempts to conceal violence against women through reverse metaphor and satire. Similarly, the WWF poster emphasises the analogy between environmental destruction and human life using the juxtaposition technique. On the other hand, the Weight Watchers poster humorously depicts the weight control process through wordplay and visual puns. The Orion telescope advertisement highlights the product's power of discovery through magnification ratios and visual metaphor. The Keloptic advertisement poster explains the function of glasses through visual metaphor by comparing blurred and clear images. Furthermore, the Nivea night cream poster emphasises the product's function through simple and direct narration. These findings show that visual narrative forms are not merely an aesthetic choice but are directly related to the perception of the message, its persuasive power, and the expectations of the target audience. Consequently, strategic visual choices in poster design enhance the message's impact and simultaneously strengthen the process of reaching the target audience. By analysing visual narrative forms in contemporary posters, the study thoroughly reveals the effects of visual strategies used for social awareness and commercial purposes through narrative techniques such as metaphor, satire, and analogy.
